Partners In Culturally Appropriate Care (PICAC)

The Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care Program aims to develop partnerships between the Department of Health and Ageing, culturally diverse communities, residential aged care facilities and other relevant aged care services. As well as supporting aged care facilities to provide culturally appropriate services, the program also develops and maintains links with communities to determine their needs and provide them with up-to-date information on the services available. It also uses the information gathered to help Government and other service providers to understand the issues involved with culturally appropriate aged care.

This is how we can help aged care services:
  • provide staff dealing in aged care with cross cultural awareness training and training in the use of interpreters;
  • assist in the development of multicultural policies for facilities;
  • provide, or help to access resources that will encourage culturally appropriate care;
  • promote facilities to multicultural community organisations that deliver appropriate care to culturally and linguistically diverse communities;
  • assist in organising culturally appropriate activities for residents;
  • assist in the development of links with multicultural community groups, who can:
    • help to gather information about new residents’ cultural needs and preferences,
    • help to cater for clients’ religious and spiritual needs, and
    • advise on dietary customs and preferences.
