About The MRC

The Migrant Resource Centre is an organisation which helps migrants and refugees to settle in Tasmania.

Established in 1979, it is a non-government, non-profit organisation that has a volunteer committee of management. It is part of a national network of migrant resource centres.

The Migrant Resource Centre provides relevant services and resources to promote the benefit and well-being of migrants and humanitarian entrants to the State, particularly those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged. We promote greater awareness of migrant and settlement issues to the wider community.

We help:
Migrants and refugees from all countries, including
  • Older people who have language and other difficulties
  • Young people
  • Families, community groups and individuals to overcome language or cultural barriers

We can (in numerous languages or with interpreters), provide:
  • information about service providers for health, migration, education, housing, legal, financial, employment and welfare matters
  • advice and support with issues
  • support liaison with government departments or other service providers
  • help communities to find funding and develop projects
  • information sessions
  • links with communities, and
  • information about Australia and life in Tasmania.

We have:
  • experienced and skilled workers who have knowledge of services that are relevant to migrants and refugees
  • rooms and facilities for group meetings, language learning and community social activities
  • a multilingual reference library, and
  • office equipment for the use of communities.

Other Services include:
  • skills workshops and information sessions for new arrivals,
  • special events for new arrivals
  • English classes
  • cross-cultural awareness training for service providers and other organisations,
  • special aged care and youth programs, and
  • torture and trauma counselling.
