Connect I Employment Support Services I
About us
Connect is a centre for people from a refugee or humanitarian entrant background to gain employment support services to assist with positive employment outcomes. The centre is also a location for diverse workshops, training and information sessions.
Background
Connect is a new initiative by the Migrant Resource Centre (Southern Tasmania) Inc (MRC). It is funded by the Australian government (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations) through the Innovation Fund. During the recent economic downturn caused by the Global Financial Crisis, the Federal government provided a range of funding to stimulate the Australian economy. The MRC applied for funding under round two in April 2009, and was notified of its successful application, in December 2009. This project, called Connect will provide employment support services until June 2012. Connect’s premises opened in October 2010 at 332-334 Main Road Glenorchy.
Aims
Connect provides a hub for new and emerging communities in Tasmania to be informed and/or educated by Job Services Australia (JSA) agencies, government and Non-Government Organisations on relevant topics including employment and training and education opportunities.
In partnership with new and emerging communities, Connect:
-
Develops programs specifically tailored for people from refugee and humanitarian entrant backgrounds in consultation with JSA agencies.
-
Develops opportunities for social enterprise including support to implement these ideas.
-
Creates opportunities for specialist training of individuals and groups for future employment through community projects or identification of employer needs.
-
Builds on individual and community strengths through inter-generational programs to assist employability, and also projects to preserve and promote culture.
-
Provides a central place for new and emerging communities to meet and be consulted with on matters of employment.
-
Maintains or builds job services readiness through improved information sharing, mentoring and education.
