English language Classes
We provide free English classes through the Learning for Growth project to our community to assist people to overcome language barriers. This program is conducted by experienced and qualified English teachers
The classes are conducted in a friendly and supportive learning environment, and designed in such a way as to allow students to gain some 'daily life' interaction skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Each program will have classes for a few hours per week. Classes are free. Unfortunately, the Centre cannot provide child care and classes are for adults only.
General English Program
This program is for people who can already read, write, listen / understand and speak English quite well. It is for students who have been studying at Stage 2 Certificate in Spoken & Written English at Polytechnic, and for those who are nearly ready to start Stage 3 (pre-Intermediate to early Intermediate level). There will be no formal tests, and no certificates. The topics will be ‘daily life’ in Australian society, with opportunities for students to share experiences and traditions from their own culture.
Family and Community Interaction English Program
This program is for people who mainly want to improve their listening / understanding and speaking, so they can feel more comfortable and confident speaking in English with family members, friends, neighbours, shop assistants, bank staff, Centrelink staff, their children’s teachers, doctors and dentists, library staff…. Lots of people in the community! In these classes there will be very little reading and writing, but many different activities to help improve pronunciation, listening skills, asking and answering questions, explaining facts and ideas, talking about ‘daily life’ with different people and enjoying general conversation.
Important
Our programs are for people who have finished their hours at Polytechnic Migrant Education; for those who cannot enrol in Mission Australia English classes; and for those with Extended Visitor Visas or Business Entry Visa applications, who cannot attend other English programs free of charge. We can also enrol people who have a visa with a Work Permit and wish to stay in Tasmania for some time.
