FICT - Families in Cultural Transition

The Phoenix Centre ran two series of ‘Families in Cultural Transition – FICT’ workshops, funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Service and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). FICT is a structured program of group work which is designed to support the settlement of migrants and refugees who have experienced traumatic events. The Phoenix Centre delivered the FICT program to 27 members of the Bhutanese and Eritrean/Ethiopian communities.

The evaluation of the FICT program showed that the participants highly valued the practical information they received and there is evidence that they feel more competent in their dealings with Service Providers and mainstream society. Furthermore, participants reported that they are more aware of the changes occurring in their relationships and families due to the settlement process. The FICT program contributed to build trust and relationships between Phoenix Centre/MRC and the communities involved which significantly lowered the barriers to seek counselling services where appropriate.

Due to its success the Phoenix Centre has received further funding for FICT from FaHCSIA for 2010-2011.
