Top Gear and Second Gear Driving Programs

Top Gear

Top Gear is a program that can provide access to cars and a Mentor for people who need 50 hours of driving practice to sit their P1 drivers' licence test. If you have your L2 licence and you are ready to drive on the road with the help of an English speaking Mentor, you may be able to join Top Gear.

Second Gear

Second Gear is a program for people with their L1 or L2 licence who need to improve their English for Driving, or who need to learn basic driving skills before driving on the road with a Mentor or Driving Instructor. Second Gear has workshops for groups of about 10 to 12 people.If you know other people in your community who would like to do Second Gear, workshops can be organised for your community group. You can also register on your own to participate.

In Second Gear you will learn about:

  • English for Driving

  • Pars of the car in English

  • Tasmanian Road Rules and Signs

  • What you need to do to pass your L2 and P1 Driving Tests

  • Road Safety Attitudes and Skills

  • Driving and the Law.

In Second Gear you will be able to practice basic driving skills, parking and three point turns and basic car maintenance.

Becoming a Mentor
